William ‘Wilmo’ Sumner, a farmer from Wrightsville and son-in-law of Ray & Jan Foster, is the pull announcer and he was Ryan Merritt’s roommate at Georgia Southern. The Merritt family were born and bred in Georgia and the grounds that now hold the pulls were once their playgrounds growing up and are leased to the Liberty Truck and Tractor Pull. In 2014 Dave Paulus and Ray Foster retired from the committee of Liberty Antique Tractor Pull and the following year, the Liberty Antique Tractor Pull was changed and officially incorporated to Liberty Truck and Tractor Pull. The first Diesel Truck event, called ‘Smokin’ 09’ was held at Liberty in 2009 and in November 2011 ‘Diesels in Dark Corners’ began and these events now attract upwards of 4,000 people from all over the US and even some from overseas. Having pulled antique tractors while living in Ohio, Veazey resident Dave Paulus became the fourth member of the Liberty Antique Tractor Pull in 1999 and the following year, the pulls were moved from Ashley’s farm to the Liberty community. The first pull at the farm of Roy Ashley, outside the city limits on White Plains Road in 1997 and with a crowd of 800 people, the Liberty Antique Tractor Pull began.

Today the sled driver is in the cab of the sled. Their first pull practice sled was built from scrap and whatever they could find and the driver of the sled, rode alongside with a distance measurer. As the weight moves forward on the sled, it becomes more difficult for the tractor to move it and the weight on the sled causes the tractor to either choice down the engine or the tires spin bringing both sled and tractor to a stop.įrom 1993-1997, three men, Darrell Merritt, his brother Jeffery and Ray Foster travelled throughout Georgia and South Carolina pulling their antique tractors three to four weekends a month and in 1996, decided that the only way to not travel so far, wide and so often, was to build their own pulling sled and have their own pull in White Plains.
The challenge of a tractor pull is to demonstrate how far a tractor can pull a sled and they are built in order to allow the weight to increase as the tractor or truck moves forward. I think I took a thousand photos that day, I got down and dirty in the red dirt and learned not to wear white at a tractor pull! I also got to meet the great people behind the pulls in the form of Melinda and Darrell Merritt, brother Jeffery Merritt and his son Ryan and wanted to know the story as to how the Liberty Truck and Tractor Pulls began. Having been born in Sydney Australia and despite having lived in the USA since 1991, I had no idea what it was or what it was about and so, one very hot and humid day, my husband and I arrived at the pull and we were hooked. My love of Truck and Tractor Pulls began over four years ago when I was asked to cover a pull for the Lake Oconee News. Points series vehicles must adhere to Liberty Truck and Tractor Pull Rules for their specified class The vehicle may have a different driver than what is registered for points series. You will get 5 points for moving the sled, must move the sled a measurable distance. The Points Series will be ran on our 5 regular season pull: April 25th, May 23rd, June 20th, August 22nd, October 24th. 1st place 10 points, 2nd place 9 points, 3rd 8 points, 4th 7 points, 5th 6 points, 4th on down will get 5 points each. Points Champion of each class will also get a jacket. The extra $20 will go back into the pot for payout for end of points series.
